• Question: what will happen if the earth stopped orbiting the sun ?

      Well if the Earth just stopped in it’s orbit, it would then fall straight into the Sun since it would be attracted by the Sun’s gravity. That’s not going to happen though, since it would take something like a collision with another planet the same size as Earth going in the opposite direction to stop it, kind of like a head on car crash. If that happened, falling into the Sun would be the least of our worries!

      If Earth left the Solar System, which is equally unlikely, we wouldn’t have the Sun’s light to keep us warm. That would be just as bad as falling into the Sun…
